Absolutely beautiful poem! It really captures the tragedy of the situation, as well as the extraordinary courage and trust the equine soldiers possessed. Thank you so much for this tribute!

Nice article! I think, as time marches forward, pun intended, we will see more and more of these volunteer [dare I say, 'regulated militia'] develop. I am always amazed at the level of volunteerism in all the public arenas.

That is so great! The horses are a great way to garner positive feelings from the public also: I remember several years ago seeing a mounted policeman outside of a club in downtown Providence. Rather than sitting in a cruiser, isolated and intimidating, the mounted policeman was able to engage the crowd leaving the club and actually incited smiles rather than the usual - and unfortunate - negativity that is usually directed at policemen.

That is an amazing and truly inspiring story! The fact that she went through such hardships, and not only overcame her physical barriers, but the social barriers that had been forced upon her! Extraordinary! Thanks for sharing that remarkable story!

That is so fascinating! I had no idea "horse whispering" had such a long and (sometimes tragic!) history. Thank you so much for that informative synopsis! The passion you have for this subject, Jerri, clearly shines through in your writing. I can't wait to read more!
